Books With Feet

Stories and books are powerful tools. They stir the senses, arouse the imagination and spark a love of classic literature.  Books with Feet inspires youth and adults to READ by performing great literature for general audiences, school groups, libraries and other community organizations. Visit Showtimes for current Books with Feet productions.

Books with Feet, a nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization, strives to bring great literary giants to an age of media and Internet craze.  The concept honors the written word by transforming classic fictional short stories and novellas into staged performances. Every written word is performed -- the dialogue and the narrative!

Through a series of workshops the actors develop a sense of which words belong to their characters in the story until a script is developed. Produced with minimal staging and with simplicity, the written word comes alive as the authors' intended language is converted from the page to the stage, putting the text "on its feet” in a full theatrical production!  The featured authors are the true stars as the actors honor these masters of literature by allowing the writing to speak for itself and tell its story.

It is estimated that 860 million adults worldwide (nearly two-thirds of whom are women) do not know how to read or write, and that more than 100 million children lack access to education.  Books with Feet perform in various locations around Los Angeles.  Our goal is to create a home for our Company, as well as take Books with Feet to libraries, schools, youth groups and organizations concerned with literacy.
